Do Not Dry Clean: Zegema Beach Records

Look, a new feature and here I was thinking I'd run out of steam after the first Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue. These posts will highlight a few releases from a given label in a post and this here inaugural post of Do Not Dry Clean focuses on Zegema Beach Records and a handful of their releases.

Zegema Beach is run by David Norman who is bounding between continents as I type but the label was founded in Canada. He also runs the Open Mind/Saturated Brain blog, which  hosts all sorts of cool features, premiers and mixes as well as being part of мятеж and Swallow's Nest, who just played their last show.

As you might guess, as it is gracing my blog Zegema Beach Records operates a fine line of screamo and weirdo hardcore. Not only this but they're offering free worldwide shipping on orders over $40CAD, which is utterly absurd and running until 31st of December, so help them help you to help bands.

So without any further preamble, here are some releases you should check out from the label and one distro pick if you happen to be in the position to spend some money in their store

Lyed - The Immolated Earth

Yes, the metalcore revival is real and has been for sometime, yes this is a good thing. Lyed are taking elements of the early to mid '00s sound and discarding the fat to leave a sinewy, weaponised sonic creature that benefits from a hefty dose of conviction. angular melodic lines crash against dissonant stop-start breakdowns while full throated barks from vocalist Elliot render the vacant sloganeering of metalcore past a distant memory.

Terry Green - LP

Continuing the fine tradition of bands with people names are Terry Green, who enter the fray with a delightful melodic screamo attack. Theirs is a combination of pretty, occassionally delicate instrumentals and a bludgeoning scream. The music conjures images of the coming togethers in community halls and basements that you fantasize about without being solely indebted to that past.

Seeyouspacecowboy - Fashion Statements of the Socially Aware

For those of a certain age, Seeyouspacecowboy may evoke painful memories of Friend-Trains, Top-8s and some really not OK lyrical tropes. That said, they entirely sidestep all of that to recall some of the most gleefully absurd heavy music that all but vanished for almost a decade. Combining elements of math-grind, metalcore, post-hardcore and yes, even dance punk in to something lithe, energetic and off-kilter without being corny.

Capacities - The Unexamined Life (Distro pick)

Capacities are one of my favourite modern screamo bands, they have all the prerequisit 'P's to make it work: Passion, Power, Precision and .... Psincerity. They have a very impressive "former members of" list made all the more impressive by their steadfast commitment to making Capacities its own entity that stands independent of any notion of legacy or influence. The Unexamined Life careens by in such a manner that makes it not only worth living, but utterly vital.
